Pregnancy Acupuncture | The Trimesters

Gentle, drug-free support throughout pregnancy

Pregnancy acupuncture involves minimal intervention, is drug-free, and works alongside your body's natural physiological processes. Many women choose acupuncture during pregnancy to support their wellbeing, help manage common pregnancy-related symptoms, and prepare for labour and birth.

We have many years of experience supporting mothers-to-be through every stage of pregnancy. Treatment is always tailored to your individual needs, constitution, medical history, and stage of pregnancy.

Research suggests acupuncture may help with a range of pregnancy-related symptoms, including: nausea and vomiting, pelvic and back pain, sleep disturbances, anxiety, stress, and preparation for labour. Acupuncture has been shown to have a good safety profile when provided by appropriately trained practitioners.

First Trimester (Conception to 12 Weeks)

The first trimester is a period of rapid development for both mother and baby. Many women experience fatigue, nausea, heightened emotions, and anxiety — all completely normal responses to the enormous physical and hormonal changes taking place.

Once you have a positive pregnancy test, acupuncture can be a gentle and supportive therapy during these early weeks. We typically recommend coming every one to two weeks until your 12-week scan. Treatment focuses on supporting healthy circulation, calming the nervous system, and helping your body adapt and build a strong foundation for pregnancy.

It is also commonly used to help with:

  • Morning sickness and nausea
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Headaches
  • Sleep disturbances

In Chinese medicine, the support acupuncture can provide is often described as 安胎 (ān tāi) — calming the foetus. The idea is simple: a baby thrives when the mother is well nourished and settled. When depleted, stressed, or unwell, that sense of security is disturbed. Acupuncture works to strengthen and restore — for the baby's benefit and for yours.

Many women find that regular treatment during the first trimester offers not just physical relief, but a sense of reassurance and continuity of care during what can be an uncertain and emotionally tender time.

Second and Third Trimesters (12–36 Weeks)

As pregnancy progresses, acupuncture can help support comfort and wellbeing while your body adapts to the increasing demands of carrying your growing baby.

During this stage, treatment is often recommended approximately every four weeks, although frequency can be adjusted according to your individual circumstances and any symptoms that arise.

Acupuncture is commonly used to help with:

  • Pelvic girdle pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Rib pain
  • Heartburn and indigestion
  • Constipation
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Anxiety and emotional wellbeing
  • Oedema (swelling)

Treatment aims to promote good circulation, support healthy musculoskeletal function, and help maintain balance within the body.

Breech Presentation

If your baby is in a breech position, treatment is usually recommended between 32 and 35 weeks. Acupuncture is often combined with moxibustion (the warming of specific acupuncture points using the herb mugwort).

Research suggests that moxibustion may increase the likelihood of a breech baby turning into a head-down position, particularly when used during this time window.

Preparing for Birth (36 Weeks Onwards)

From 36 weeks onwards, many women choose to have weekly treatments in preparation for labour.

These pre-birth treatments are designed to support the body's natural preparation for birth. Specific points are selected according to your constitution, pregnancy history, and any symptoms present.

Treatment may help:

  • Encourage optimal positioning of the baby
  • Promote relaxation and reduce anxiety
  • Support cervical readiness
  • Improve pelvic mobility
  • Prepare the muscles, tendons, and ligaments involved in labour
  • Build stamina and resilience for birth and the early postnatal period

Some studies suggest that women receiving regular pre-birth acupuncture may experience shorter labours and reduced rates of certain medical interventions, although research findings remain mixed.

Acupressure for Labour

Many women choose to bring their birth partner to one of their later appointments.

During this session, we can teach a selection of simple acupressure techniques that may be used before and during labour to promote relaxation, encourage contractions, and help manage discomfort.

40 Weeks and Beyond

If labour has not yet started, acupuncture can continue to support both mother and baby while encouraging the body's natural readiness for birth.

Treatment focuses on:

  • Supporting relaxation and reducing stress
  • Encouraging hormonal and neurological pathways involved in labour
  • Promoting efficient uterine activity
  • Helping the body transition naturally into labour

Research suggests acupuncture may increase cervical readiness and may reduce the need for medical induction in some women, although evidence remains variable and treatment should be viewed as supportive rather than guaranteed to induce labour.

Safety

Acupuncture is considered safe during pregnancy when performed by a qualified practitioner with specialist training in maternity care. Treatment is always adapted to the stage of pregnancy, and points traditionally considered inappropriate during certain stages are avoided where appropriate.

If you have any questions about whether acupuncture may be suitable for you, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss your individual circumstances.

Where do the needles go?
During pregnancy we avoid lower abdominal points and use mostly ‘distal’ points. These are on your arms and legs, below your elbow and knees.

If we do need to use points on or around your abdomen it is done with with extreme care and knowledge of your anatomy and physiology, and with utmost care of your womb and amniotic sac.

I will always discuss what points I am going to use first and make sure that you feel comfortable.

How much treatment do I need?
At the initial consultation we go through your medical history and any notes or test results that you have, and combine these with a Chinese medical diagnosis to develop an individual treatment plan to suit you. This plan will depend on the nature of your issue and stage of pregnancy.
